Commodities for Dummies by Amine Bouchentouf

Summary

A good guide book on the basics you need to know about commodity markets. The materials give the readers a solid foundation of what they are dealing with and the factors affecting these markets. Various ways to engage in trading the commodities are also discussed so that the readers can choose from the various instruments (e.g. ETFs, futures, etc.) as oppose to the tunnel view from say a future trader’s perspective. Good introduction for both traders and long term investors who want to diversify their portfolios. Highly recommended.

My Life as a Quant: Reflections on Physics and Finance by Emanuel Derman

Summary

Do not expect to find trading techniques or insights from this book. It is an interesting account of someone who has been working “on the other side of the fence” (a.k.a institution) as a quant. Not just any quant, but one of the famous quants who has his name as part of the Black-Derman-Toy model. It is also a good historical account of the changes going through the financial industry from 1980s to early 2000s. Good read in general for those who are interested in understanding how science transformed the financial markets from the point of view of a scientist.

The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Day Trading Like a Pro by Peter J. Sander

Summary

This book is an overview of daytrading US equities and future markets. All basic aspects on daytrading are covered with reasonable advices on risk control and expectations. The examples on the trading tools are outdated and a number of brokerages mentioned in the book no longer exist. Overall a tourist guide to daytrading – you get to know the names of the things that you are supposed to look up for but it stops there.
